a little bit of history

I love American history. Love love love it. I was thrilled to have the chance to live back here for a while and have the chance to visit so much history. Jeremey and I came a few years ago, but didn't have enough time to absorb it all. I honestly don't know if they'll ever be enough time. We've had an absolutely amazing time back here, but the highlight of my trip so far has been our tour of the White House. It was absolutely incredible. It was the one thing I was determined we would do ... and last week, a little bit of history came to life for me :)
Every time we head up to DC, we take the metro. The kids love to ride the train, and they always want to stand up. Like the whole time.
When we went into the White House, they had a letter writing booth for Christmas Cards for the Troops. Abbie and I wrote a few. I love that they did this :)
Then we moved onto our tour (it was self guided, with secret service agents posted in each room to ask questions.) This was perfect, we had time to see all we wanted to and enjoy it without having to hush the kids so everyone could hear, and then hustle from room to room with a group. I'm so glad we went at Christmas time!! They go all out at the White House, it was absolutely beautiful. It takes 150 volunteers 4 days to decorate.
Look at these snowflakes!! Every window had either snowflake art or beautiful wreaths. With all the trees, wreaths, and garlands, it smelled incredible.
You'll have to forgive the pictures, we weren't allowed to bring our cameras, but when we got there they said if we had camera phones, we could use them.
Abbie and Annie with the First Dog, Bo.
Hillary :)
I went a little crazy for the China. This is George W.'s pattern. It was my favorite.
This was my favorite room. I loved that they're rooms that are still in use, often. They shut it down for tours a few times a month, and the rest of the time they're fully functioning. It made it a little more exciting, to hear about the visitors and things that had taken place in these rooms, both historically and recently.
This is the room that the China was all displayed in.
How incredible is this nativity?!
The Green Room.
The Blue Room. It was decorated with military ribbons and medals, as well as pictures of servicemen and women. It was really neat.
When we came in here, we had just left the Green Room and the Blue Room. Abbie said, 'let me guess ... this is the Red Room? Whatever. I'd call it something cooler than that. ' It was funny :)
The White House has so many incredible chandeliers. In case you wondered.
This is the room where they host State Dinners and fancy pants stuff like that.
I fell in love with this painting. I wish I had a clearer picture of it. I was going to buy a print, but it was pouring and we had to walk 3 blocks back to the metro, and I didn't want to risk getting it wet. I ordered one instead :) I'm a huge JFK fan, and I loved this picture. A lot. Here's a better picture I found. You love it too, right? :)
My man has an extremely healthy respect for Ronald Reagan.
Since we've been here, the girls have been participating in the Junior Ranger program, at each historical site they've been getting booklets with history activities in them, and when they finish the activities they get a patch. Here they are getting sworn in as 'American Jr. Rangers' where they promised to keep learning, sharing, and respecting the history of their great country.
It was a beautiful day! Exhausting, amazing, and beautiful. Abbie earned that Bojangles and a little nap :)
